Elk Rapids is a village resting on the shore of the Grand Traverse Bay with the Elk River flowing through it.  It is part of Elk Rapids township in Antrim County in the state of Michigan.  The village is about 15 miles (24 km) north of Traverse City.  The village has a total area of 2.01 square miles (5.21 km2), of which, 0.36 square miles (0.93 km2) is water.
